1.) This article is about implementing virtual reality in real-world situations. Medically, virtual reality is being developed to control the brain’s pain sensors as Hunter Hoffman says “…to persuade the brain to ignore pain signals in favor of more compelling scenarios.”. A United States Soldier tested the technology after suffering from 3rd degree burns over 30% of his body. He told researchers that SnowWorld (the game they used for research purposes, to train the brain’s pain centers) completely took his mind off the physical thinking of his pain, and focused on the game. This not only allow the body to heal in peace, but also game the soldier peace from not having any pain.
2.) In my opinion, this is great to look into! If we can develop technology that aids the fallen, or people who are unable to think/live without the use of drugs, then this research will definitely positively impact the world.
1. What this article is about. (Describe in detail) This article is about using VR as a form of distraction therapy. Distraction therapy is a method of relieving pain or angst by having the subject conditioned and distracted by external events. It is often used with children and victims of psychological trauma, but it can also be very effective with adults going through something very painful. The thought is that VR could be used to simulate an ideal environment to distract the brain from it’s original trauma.
2.What is your opinon on the virtual reality technology beyond the gaming industry? ^Opinion* (Make sure you do your research to backup your opinon.) ^Opinion*
I am not quite sure what to think of this. Virtual reality has come a long way; but, input latency and poor refresh rates can ruin the immersion of the experience and end up causing motion sickness and other issues. Ultimately, immersion is what the brain needs in order to distract itself from other stimulus. There are other methods of immersion that would work better for different individuals, but VR is distracting. Take books for example. There is nothing ground breaking as far as the technology goes in a book, but your mind can get incredibly immersed in a story and you can place yourself in the setting. For other patients for which stories are not effective there are other methods of immersion such as immersion in a game on a 2D screen. Take Hai Du Lam, for example. He had a collapsed lung and the only thing that distracted him from the pain was streaming League of Legends from his hospital bed. You see, the goal of distraction therapy is not to fool the brain or person into believing that it is in a different place. The goal is to immerse the brain in something else. The current shortcomings of VR actually prevent immersion. It is in an uncanny valley where it is too real for the brain to except small errors.
1.) This article is about the virtual reality headset being used to help people in therapy. It is supposed to create a virtual world where the person can forgot about their pain and problems.
2.) I'm not sure what I think about this, I have a real good feeling that it won't work though. People in therapy are there for a reason, and most of the time its that they have a ton of things going on in their mind that they need help organizing it all. If they cannot even think straight, do people really believe that they would be able to get themselves in check in their own virtual reality? Don't get me wrong, if this works, a lot of lives will be saved and a lot of people will be happier. Another problem with this though is what happens when they have to take off the headset, Then they go back on their problems and in some cases would probably be worse. If they got to see what it would have been like without the pain, they would strive for it, but some would see it helpless and give up all together. I guess its a wash, it works in some cases and not in others, but overall would be better for society.
1) This article goes through what virtual reality is. It then discusses the everyday lives of victims of serious wounds, such as burns. New studies have shown that the mind actually divides its attention up, regardless of if it is pain or just some interesting thing the mind needs to process. With this knowledge, doctors are able to use Virtual Reality technologies to provide a fun game to patients, which also leads to reduce the pain they experience.
2) Virtual Reality, in my opinion, is not a very good option for gaming. It is expensive and is not near refined enough to constitute a gaming device. Beyond gaming, however, I feel as if VR will have the capabilities to do amazing things. Being able to look around at buildings and see titles, or even something like this where patients who play the game can experience pain reduction similar to morphine is incredible. I believe this is where virtual reality will grow, at least for now.
1. Basically this article says that some day when I have to go in to surgery that during it I can rank up my ELO in League or maybe do the same surgery in surgeon simulator. But in all reality (Ha! Sick pun) studies are showing that patients react better to distracting games during a surgery then with morphine. So if you think about it, you could stick a knife in a kid while he's playing xbox and he won't feel it. 2. Virtual Reality has an enormous amount of real world applications other than just the gaming realm. Yeah, the gaming is what draws in a lot of people but the applications are virtually (Ha! Another pun) endless, they can be used to train soldiers and doctors, pilots and electricians. Any profession that uses hands can now be taught virtually without any risk of danger or failure. It's amazing to see how ideas that start with gaming can actually have an influence on society as a whole and progress us towards the future.
1. the article talks about new therapy's for pain using virtual reality. basically the virtual game distracts your brain form the pain of a procedure. it similar to who pediatric dentists and other doctors play movies in the rooms with kids in order to distract the kid from the frighting procedures. This however is designed more to help victims of burns by taking them to a cool place and in this case snow land in hopes of lessening the pain of things like redressing and daily maintenance of there wounds. The article continues to say that it has shown promising results. one soldier even saying it worked better than morphine at reliving the pain.
2.Virtual technology outside the gaming industry is a huge and profitable market. imagine one day where the movies we go to are in actual three Dee and where not just watching but taking part. It will also be a huge boon to education instead of talking about a cell students can put on a pair of glasses and be standing inside of one making the classroom into a very engaging place. It also apparently has implication in treating pain. imagine if to treat phantom the phantom pain involved with limb loss a virtual reality made your brain think that the arm was still or other limb was still there eliminating the pain.
1. This article is about how video games can change the way a person feels, even if they are suffering from PTSD or severe burns. It talks about how virtual reality manipulates the way in which the brain processes pain and joy. Basically, all you have to do is put on a headset and plug in headphones and you are in a completely different world. Real life pain is not nearly as intense when you are using virtual reality technology. 2. My opinion is completely in favor of using virtual reality technology outside of gaming. It is an extremely sophisticated piece of technology, and its usefulness should be optimized in any possible way. My evidence is about Lieutenant Sam Brown. He suffered third degree burns over 30% of his body and goes through several painful processes every day where nurses clean his wounds. The pain is unbearable to the point that it can make him relive the time when he got burned in war. However, when he puts on a virtual reality headset and enters a world called SnowWorld, his pain is reduced so much so that he barely notices it. In many studies (like his), virtual reality technology has proven to be more helpful than drugging their patients with morphine to reduce pain.
1. This article is about wounded people and how to control their pain through augmented reality. Some physiologists think that having the people play virtually reality games to keep the brain focused on something else. They say it has helped people for the most part but need further development to refine it.
2. I think its a nice idea but needs to be tested more and they need to prove it works. So overall I like the idea of it. The medical field would would definitely advance with this technology so it will be very interesting where this ends up. (100 words)

It could possibly work, I bet there are many more applications for virtual reality in medicine other than what they are proposing. It's good to pursue this avenue though because it can lead to better advancements. It makes logical sense, to I think it's a god idea.

This type of treatment is being done burn victims in order to make it possible to get treatment without having to suffer through excruciating pains. This works due to some reason breakthroughs in psychology that point towards the brain having much more control over our perception of pain than we thought. They use this coupled with specially designed simulated environments that are fine tuned to spark different areas of the brain.
2. I actually am a big fan of this technology. This is exactly what new tech out of gaming should be used for, furthering technology in other fields. The idea that tech modeled for video games is being used to help those in need and give humanitarian aid, gives video gaming as a whole a little bit of a better reputation. I support it.
