This article is about a top down 3D printer that uses a liquid resin and laser grid to print objects from the top down. This process is faster and has a better layer height resolution than bottom up methods used by most ABS and PLA printers. I think it is an interesting concept; but, I am not a fan of it. From what I have seen, the printer prints solid objects faster than filament printers yet if you count in time for the object to be dried and cleaned of the fluid, I don’t think much time would be saved. Also, the prints seem less stable than ABS and more brittle than PLA. Another issue with it is that the concept is not easily scalable. A printer with 3 cubic inches of liquid is easy to make and manage for tiny prints. Scaling this technology up to anything larger than a cubic yard would get very messy and expensive very quickly. Personally I am more of a fan of the concept of a ceiling/tripod mounted printer that uses the ground as a print bed and 3 retractable strings to position itself and move. This would allow for a very large print bed in a fairly portable and lightweight machine.

It also amazes me that the printer is able to manipulate the amount of oxygen the object being printed is exposed to. This is because this factor significantly increases the printing speed.

It makes use of liquid and instead of layering like it used to, it instead pulls it out of the liquid while using ultraviolet lights to selectively harden specific parts of it in order to create some cool designs. I would imagine this could have some really cool industrial uses if the size can be increased.
