Sonic Tractor Beams

A group of scientists managed to take advantage of the energy present in sound in order to manipulate objects. Using sound to create high-pressure and low-pressure areas, the scientists were able to create a field where the object could rest. Eventually, they managed to figure out how to manipulate the sounds in order to move the object around within an area.

  2. 1.Scientists created a sort of tractor beam. Although it isn't able to pull anything they were able to create a force that could influence an object
2.It uses sounds waves that puts the selected object in low pressure and then can manipulate the object. Although the experimental unit isn't quite capable of large objects
3.The bigger the object, the higher pressure the waves and the harder it is to make.
4.Just like in star wars it would be great for reclaiming anything that was lost in space, whether it be a ship that ran out of fuel or a guy got lost.

  3. 1. This article is about a new technology called the sonic tractor beam. Scientists have actually created a real life prototype tractor beam.

    2. The sonic tractor beam uses a precisely timed sequence of sound waves that create a region of low pressure that traps tiny objects that can then be manipulated solely by sound waves, thus causing the object to levitate.

    3. Because the tractor beams use sound-wave manipulation, they can severely harm your body. Internal organs are most at risk of being thrown out of place or moved in ways they shouldn't when being sent through the tractor beam.

    4. Transportation would be the most practical use for the tractor beam, it's basically going to be to escalators what escalators were to stairs, more efficient.

  4. 1) It's about a little device that can control a small object by using sound waves. They say that the sounds are so high that it would make doggies run away from it. Some studies at a college found out how to use this device. But before the discovery on using sound waves people tried using magnets and other things to try to make things float in mid air. But in 2014 they found out how to do it by simply use sound.
    2) It uses sound waves to guide little objects through the air. They built it by using tiny little speakers made by a company. They can use timers to produce the sound waves and to control it like a little game. But the tiny waves can somewhat hurt you a little cause they used an example that if you're at a concert you can feel your insides move and or jiggle at some parts. So gotta be careful when around these bad boys.
    3) the challenges it would cause is the amount of sound to use and how safe it would be. Cause sound can hurt you a lot. So it would be very dangerous making a bigger scale of these things and our cost a lot of moola.
    4) What I think these would be used for is maybe in working? Or just keep them in the scientist lab to do work of some sort. I would say maybe space? But space has no sounds therefore no working. So it would maybe just stick to the science department.

  5. 1.) It's about a controller that can control and manipulate objects by making them move by sound. Yeah, that sounded grammatically incorrect, guess who cares. The article gives the ability to control objects using sounds. Sound better? Shut up.

2.) Using sound waves, if the frequency is high enough in a low frequency area, any object would be able to move from it.

3.) Well in order to get a tractor beam you'd have to have a big enough device to be able to move the bigger objects, and it has to be in a low frequency area.

4.) I don't see a reason that manipulating objects using sound doesn't do anything because we can already manipulate objects using our hands so I don't see any sort of great task we could perform with this ability.

  6. 1. Scientists have been able to create a form of tractor beam, but using the power of sound waves.

    2. By organizing the release of the waves, it is possible to create a region that goes against gravity with little pressure. By doing this it can hold an object in midair, and if the objects drifts in another direction the zone will push it back into place.

    3. The difficulties with this technology are how big the device actually has to be in order to actual hold objects into place, and there's always the issue of safety with things like this.

    4. By using the power of the tractor beam, we could create real life UFO's and steal all the humans and cattle we could need.

  7. 1) It's a controller that is able to control a small item or object by using sound waves. The pitch is high enough to make dogs run away. A college did a study and discovered ways to use the device. Before that however, magnets were used.

2)Sound waves are used to move small objects through the air. Small speakers are used along with timers to control the device. There is a small risk on using it as such, proceed with caution.

    3) The big dilemma is the risks and the decibel levels of sound used. Large scale of these could cause many problems.

    4) This isn't very helpful as it currently stands however, if some use for it came out of the medical field then perhaps this could prove useful.

  8. 1. The article is about how tractor beams from star trek can be a reality. These beams can exert force onto objects in the air. The beams can make objects levitate and create a force field of sorts.
    2. The technology is made possible through a series of precisely timed sequence of sound waves and creates a region of low pressure and manipulate and exert force onto objects.
    3. The challenge of these tractor beams is that they can barely move anything at all. The thing about modern technology that limits us from advancing to true sci-fi technology is the lack of an efficient power source to do so. These tractor beams won’t amount to anything useful.
    4. The most practical use for these tractor beams would be to suck in a foreign enemies ammo supply one bullet at a time. Imagine, while ISIS is sleeping, each individual bullet floats quietly through the air, across the desert and into the hands of Americans.

  9. 1. Scientists have brought us real life science-fiction, Tractor Beams!

    2. This tractor beam is like a SUPER-STEREO, it moves objects with sound. This device blasts sound-waves at a controlled magnitude in order to levitate objects.

    3. Having enough sound to levitate a tiny ball is more than you think, but having enough sound to levitate an entire human body would be immense. I think being able to control this sound will be a very big challenge.

    4. I don't think this tech will ever be used for levitating people, but the article mentioned some suggestions of what this tech could do. The article mentioned using this device to help preform surgeries without cutting open someone's body. Simply using the device to move things inside the patient's body.

  10. 1) It talks about the sonic tractor beam which can levitate objects with sound waves. In these articles, it explains how it works and explains the background of this invention.

    2) It relies on timed sequence of sound waves that create a region of low pressure. It traps the tiny object that can then manipulated solely by sound waves.

    3) One of the challenges that they had to face was the wavelength. If the wave length was longer, the larger the region of the low pressure.
    4) I think this invention can help move larger objects from a distance. This would be much easier than using a dolly.

  11. The article is about a team of scientists who scientifically created a tractor beam out of sound waves. They were able to move objects while electronically controlling the beam, extending technology and programming to a physical aspect.
The technology controls releases waves vibrating the air, being able to avoid gravity and suspend an item mid air, while it is able to move in other directions.
To create a tractor beam, the object which supplied these waves would have to be much larger than the object itself. Current technology does not support such a massive device.
Tractor beams could be used to access objects in space, thousands of miles away. It will be increasingly useful as going to space becomes more accessible and mainstream.

  12. 1. The articles are about a sonic tractor beam, an acoustic sound wave created from a 2D surface that can move objects up and down in a small space.

    2. By controlling the sound waves and condensing them, a small field can be created to change the density in the air, making small objects move up and down, so far however, nothing can be pulled or pushed. Think of a rock concert how the sound of everything is not only loud, but you can feel the ground underneath you and your insides seem to move or vibrate. It’s all a matter of controlling the force produced by the sound waves.

    3. Some of the challenges are actually controlling those sound waves, how would one get the sound waves to move in such a way to actually control an object, rather than just making it levitate up and down.

    4. Like the Bristol University article stated, one of the most practical uses for tech like this could be transporting very delicate objects across a line to make sure it keeps it safe. It seems to make sense that having small enough objects that could be carried by the sonic beam would be a good way of protecting them by keeping them from being squished by tools or even just human hands.

  13. 1. This article is about a new way of levitation. It is called the Sonic Tractor Beam. It uses sound waves to levitate and can be controlled by another electrical component.

    2. It works by using sequences of sound timed out to deny the laws of gravity and use the waves it produces to rise and float around.

    3. The main problem that is always present is the ability to control the new device and motives. Another problem is real life uses and the danger that would be present if it were integrated into everyday life.

    4. I think the most practical use of this is to lift or lower equipment that may be heavy. It could also be used in clubs as party accessories or be a decorative item.

  14. 1. A "Sonic Tractor Beam" functions by using sound waves to create pressure and move very small objects. It's like harnessing the power of an orchestra or a live-concert band.

    2. Just like you can feel a strong bass chord, these sound waves can create push effects. Thankfully, these machines emit a sound inaudible to human ears, however dogs can hear it and "would likely not like it".

    3. Its a struggle to lift small objects, so bringing it to a larger scale likely wont be possible for many years down the line.

    4. The best use for this tech would be in transportation. Objects could be passed around a facility or large building quite fast. Still though, that won't happen for years.

  15. 1. The name pretty much says it all. Sonic means something relating to or using sound waves. The Sonic Tractor Beam uses sound waves to move objects around. Although at the moment, only very small things.

    2. When a sonic boom occurs, it is able to blast objects away. By organizing sound waves to occur in a certain order (and obviously less power than a sonic boom) scientists are able to alter an objects location.

    3. Right now we can only manipulate small objects. Using stronger sound waves would destroy the object, which would defeat the purpose.

    4. Transportation would be the best way to use this. Getting a sofa up 3 flights of stair wouldn't be so much of a pain if we continue to work on this technology.

  16. 1. This article explains the workings behind a new discovery, that sound can be harnessed to cause objects to float. In order to do so, very sensitive speakers must be set up to produce specific types of sounds that will cause an object to react in certain ways.

    2. The technology uses sounds outside of the human hearing range that are very loud, about 140-150 decibels, to create pockets of lower pressure that trap an object inside. If the object attempts to move, areas of higher pressure will render the object unable to move.

    3. The main challenge with creating a sci-fi like tractor beam would be the fact that sound cannot actually move through space. Since sound travels by vibrating particles, without any particles, it is impossible for sound to travel. This is definitely not the way to go, if one is looking to create a tractor beam similar to those used in Star Wars.

    4. Similar to what the article explained, it could be incredibly useful in the medical field, allowing for pills to be ruptured at specific times inside of the body. In the future, however, it could be possible for larger-scale uses, such as possibly levitating trains or cars.

  17. 1. Its about a device that uses sound to move objects which is cool and all but who wants to use this, like u could move mount Everest son, but ain't no body got time for that.

    2. Like really son, we just explained this is question 1. Anyways, it uses sound to move object and personally I might use this device now since i explained it twice and ya its going to be fun.

    3. The main issue is, mount everest isnt getting moved anytime soon and i want it to be moved now. Also, these kids can hope that
this device moves bigger things but that aint happening k.

    4. You wouldnt break your back while moving objects, oh and btw ik my grammar is off but idk cause its the best and you know it. Anyways lets say your trying to move a mountain lifting that up aint going to work so why not use this device and hope for the best.

  18. 1. This article is about a newly-developed "tractor beam" utilizing air currents generated by a series of small speakers.
    2. When the speakers are turned on, they generate a series of ultrasonic sounds which produce small air currents that generate enough force to move a small polystyrene ball about 5 mm in diameter.

    3. One of the biggest issues, especially for creating a tractor beam on the scale of Star Wars or Star Trek, is the scale of the objects that are able to be lifted. The current version of this "tractor beam" can only lift something that weighs less than a gram a few inches off the ground, but it is able to counteract the forces of gravity--it has proven that the forces can be harnessed in this way.

    4. the most practical way to use such technology, at least as far as near future uses go, would be the movement of heavy objects. Say that you need to move a 300 pound load, but you can only lift 150 pounds; just activate this device, which will likely only weigh 10, maybe 20 pounds, and lift it with ease.

    2. The technology uses a frequency outside of the human hearing range that's very loud.

    3. It struggles to lift small objects so scaling it up to a much larger scale could fix the issue but that won't be possible for many years down the line.

    4. The best use for this would be transportation moving something without needing to exert physical force would be incredibly useful.

2.By using sound waves in a low frequency it is able to levitate objects by pushing them away.

3.They would be massive and to create a device that could pull at that size would be almost impossible and the device as said before would be to big.

4.It could be possible eventually to use it for hover boards or helpful for production lines.

  22. 1. The article is about a working tractor beam that uses sound to manipulate objects.
    2. Sound waves move through the air and with enough sound waves, can move things.
    3. In space, there is no medium for those sound waves to travel through, so a tractor beam for space use still isn't a thing yet.
    4. If it's accurate enough, to single out cancerous cells in the human body and take them out.
